While it is easy to close a door behind you, other places in the house are not naturally provided with protections. As soon as your child starts to move on his own, even on all fours, it is necessary to secure your interior in order to avoid any domestic accident.
Despite its often unsightly appearance, the security barrier is compulsory when you have small children at home. It is often used to prevent falls on stairs, but it can also be used to block access to a dangerous room such as the kitchen. Accessible in terms of price, they are also very easy to install. They thus avoid worries for parents and domestic accidents.
Step 1 - Above all, we choose a suitable safety barrier model
It exists multiple models of safety barriers to prevent children from trying the great adventure of the staircase: nets or barriers of all kinds (and at all prices), adjustable or not, with or without door, in wood or metal ... The barriers in wood or metal are much safer than the more fragile mesh models.
You can also favor a security barrier model with an automatic closing system, in order to mitigate any risk of forgetting.
The important thing is to choose a model that complies with the standards in force. This is the NF EN 1930 February 2012 standard, which must be written on the packaging.
Safety barriers are designed to protect children between 0 and 24 months. Their minimum height must be 75cm. Finally, the bars must be spaced no more than 6.5cm apart, so that the child cannot pass their head or feet through them.
Step 2 - We equip ourselves with good tools to install the barrier
For install a security barrier on a staircase, only a few DIY tools are necessary. You need a drill, a screwdriver (or even a drill-driver), a meter, four dowels, screws and the appropriate fixings supplied with the barrier.
The installation of the security barrier takes on average half an hour.
Step 3 - We take the measures
We start by measuring barrier length necessary, between the wall and the post. Then we transfer this measurement to the barrier before screwing the uprights to the right length - easy, there are pre-holes that allow to have different lengths.
We then take care of the height of the barrier to transfer the dimensions to the wall and mark the places where we will drill the holes to fix it. The barrier should be placed approximately 3 cm from the edge of the stairs.
Step 4 - We put the fixings in place
On a Placo® wall, we fix the fasteners to identify the places where we will have to drill. We do not forget to take a suitable wick before making the holes and pegging.
The plugs are compulsory for any fixing in a Placo® wall. The fasteners are then screwed securely into the wall, above and below. In the wooden post, just screw with wood screws. To secure the tourt, we decide to simply put a small piece of T-shaped steel in it.
Step 5 - The security barrier is securely installed
It only remains to ask the security barrier in the wall fixings and against the T-shaped steel piece. It is possible to adjust and fix it securely using the adjustable buttons on the sides.
Finally, we test the whole before letting your child walk freely and safely on the landing of the stairs.
